I love my job. But over the next few weeks I love it just a little more. Being a business owner of a small independent consists of many tasks, some more enjoyable than others. But THE best thing about owning a store is the sourcing and buying of new products and collections. It is both terrifying and brilliantly exciting, and my journey for finding the best products and interesting new collections for Autumn Winter 2012 has begun.

Buyers worldwide are getting ready for what is one of the busiest times ahead. It’s time to put on their buyers hats to begin predicting what will be the best sellers for 2012. An exciting but equally challenging task given the current economic climate. Considered buying has never been more important.

Below are some simple ideas on how to have a successful season:

1. Listen to your gut instinct and don’t be influenced by what others say. You know your customers better than anyone else.

2. Make a budget and stick to it. It's easy to get carried away whilst visiting buzzing tradeshows and talking to passionate designers. Stick to your budget.

3. Don’t be scared to try something new, and always put some money aside for at least one ‘risky’ brand.

4. Invest in quality rather than quantity. In these frugal times consumers are looking for sustainability. They want to buy less but buy better. You should do the same.

The Must Visit Trade Shows:

1. Bubble London – this London show has reduced my travel extensively. When it comes to children's fashion there is no better show. You find a great variety of brands under one umbrella.

2. Playtime Paris – just a train ride away to catch the few brands which don’t show in the UK.

3. Kleine Fabriek – great for discovering edgier fashion

4. CPH Kids & Ciff Kids – a must for any Scandinavian loving store

Show season got off to a flying start this week in The Netherlands.

Bubble and Speak headed to Amsterdam to check out A/W 2012's offerings at Kleine Fabriek, on the hunt for something to catch our eye and capture our imagination.

These brightly coloured roly poly dolls and playful pull alongs from Polish brand, De Houtkraam succeeded in grabbing our attention!

We are pleased to announce we will once again be supporting children’s charity Kids Company.

Founded by Camila Batmanghelidjh in 1996, the London-based charity aims to provide practical, emotional and educational support to vulnerable inner-city children and young people. Many of the 17,000 children across London reached by Kids Company’s services include the most deprived and at risk whose parents are unable to care for them due to their own practical and emotional challenges.

Kids Company offers help by providing a safe, caring, family environment where support is tailored to the needs of each individual.

As many of the children and young people supported by the charity are lacking in the most basic amenities, Bubble London is encouraging donations of NEW clothing to Kids Company. Any donations in clothes that you can offer would really help make a huge and lasting difference to the lives of kids supported by the charity.

UK artist David T. Waller sings a rainbow with this installation using 2,500 colourful toy cars.

The Royal Mail has officially released a special set of stamps commemorating children's book author Roald Dahl.

Featuring the whimsical sketches of illustrator and longtime collaborator Quentin Blake, the stamps pay tribute to "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," "The Witches," "Matilda," "James and the Giant Peach," "The Twits" and "The Fantastic Mr. Fox".

A special sheet of four stamps will also be released to mark the 30th anniversary of beloved book "The BFG."

Don’t forget that you can still see Matilda The Musical at The Cambridge Theatre in London’s West End.

With the support of creative agency YCN, London based designer Henrietta Swift launched her Light Up Your Mood Stickers exclusively at the YCN Christmas shop back in December 2009.

It didn't take long before the decorative light switch stickers were introduced and sold by a number of independent shops and galleries.

Now, the new edition stickers are available in three designs, Girls, Boys and Animals.

Each sticker pack is still made from a peel-off vinyl and contain enough designs to decorate at least 8 light switches, however you wish!

As a young child, it would be around this time of year that I would start composing a letter to Father Christmas. I’d pen a little wish list in my neatest hand writing before leaving the note on the mantle piece with an obligatory carrot, sherry and mince pie.

But it wasn’t until recently, whilst buying Christmas gifts for young children of family and friends, that I got thinking about some of my own favourite Christmas presents as a child.

Many of my much-loved toys were good old fashioned Fisher Price favourites that are still popular today, together with typical 80s toy paraphernalia like My Little Pony, The Care Bears and Rainbow Bright. It is funny how, even after decades of time, you can still vividly remember the tiniest details of your favourite playthings – here are mine…

A colourful monolith

Hosted at the Londonnewcastle Project Space in East London, The Future Tense, Spectra I, features the work of 7 contemporary artists for whom dynamic colour relationships form a central pillar of their practise.

Our personal highlight was Lee Baker's Refractive Monolith, utilising approximately 10 thousand metres of acrylic yarn.

It is even more mind-blowing to see this masterpiece being created in this video!

The bag is one of a series, produced by The Notting Hill Shopping Bag community project, which aims to reduce plastic bag use. Sold for £4 by shops and stalls across Notting Hill and Portobello Road Market, 10% of profits are donated to good causes.

Previous designs include Notting Hill’s coloured houses by an 11 year old from Colville Primary School, a map of the local area by a 10 year old from Bevington Primary School and a ‘cupcake’ design by X factor judge and Notting Hill resident Natalie Imbruglia. Future designs are in the pipeline from children at Oxford Gardens School and St Stephen’s School.

Children's Short Story Competition

Perhaps one of the most memorable independent book shops in London, Daunt Books on Marylebone High Street makes book shopping into a magical experience. Browse literary classics and discover new authors within the mesmerising Edwardian galleries.

Columbia Road, a historic spot in London's East End, famous for the Sunday flower market and a unique collection of shops, are again hosting 'Christmas Wednesdays at Columbia Road'.

The Wednesday late night opening evenings provide a perfect opportunity to pick up some Christmas gifts and support independent stores, with seasonal refreshments, music and entertainment!

I love this range because it is genuinely cheerful, with all its bright colours and happy statements.

Playmobil

Playmobil features high on our list to Santa this year. I love the fact that after all these years, Playmobil is still loved by kids in pretty much the same way as we loved it in the 70s. Besides, everyone is happy in Playmobil land, even the ghosts.

Year on year, Children in Need raise hundreds of thousands of pounds for disadvantaged youngsters in the UK.

So far, the BBC's charity has raised over £600 million, through fabulous fundraising events and generous donations.

Every November, the Children in Need appeal show takes place, broadcasting a whole evening of entertainment with many celebrities participating in live performances in order to raise awareness and plenty of money for the cause.

This year, the appeal show is today, and promises to be bigger and better than ever.

Designer Pudsey Collection

The iconic Pudsey Bear has been transformed for this year's Children in Need with a launch of the Designer Pudsey Collection.

A collaboration with many famous fashion designers has seen Pudsey become reinvented as each create their own unique version of one of the world's favourite bears. Recreated in many different fabrics, colours and patterns, Pudsey is now a sure piece of fashion history.

Fans of Pudsey and the designers involved are able to bid on one of the one-off bears from the collection in Children in Need's online auction to help raise money for disadvantaged children and young people in the UK.

Liberty London were just one of the teams involved in creating a premium Pudsey! Their bear and the rest of the collection will be exhibited in store at Liberty from until the 19 November 2011.

As if we needed any more reminders the ‘Big C’ is on its way, last week saw the return of the ever popular Spirit of Christmas fair in London’s Olympia.

I decided to set myself a challenge for Christmas, only buy gifts for children, both designed and made in the UK!

Canterbury Bears

A wonderful family business I’m ashamed to say I wasn’t familiar with before the show. Around for 31 years, all the bears are lovingly made in the UK by Kerstin Blackburn and until today, continue to be designed by her artist father.

Their workshops are located in a small village in rural Kent and these bears really are heirloom pieces that will last a lifetime.

I fell in love with Verity, a funky natural organic cotton bear. RRP £75.

Jonny’s Sister

Lovely interiors and homewares brand spotted at Bubble London in January 2010, offer colourful over-sized ‘Love Letters’ in a range of prints and fabrics. RRP £45 to £65.

For fellow thrifty shoppers I loved this reversible bunting. With ‘Merry Christmas’ on one side and ‘Happy Birthday’ on the other! With an RRP of £39.50 it’s not strictly speaking a bargain but very luxurious and will last for many years.

Millie Manu

A gorgeous British children’s wear label designed by Camilla Ridley for babies from 18 months up to 10 years old.

Her designs are unmistakably British with detailing and the use of eye-catching and delicate Liberty prints throughout.

Of course I couldn’t end the day without buying something small for myself! So I treated myself to this fab Trilby hat for the bargain price of £29!

Perfect for the drizzly weather as I made my way out of the exhibition hall laden with some rather fabulous, Best of British, purchases!

We’ve had a major crush on Liya Kebede’s Lemlem for a long time now. Yesterday, the supermodel launched an online merkato that she says is stocked with “a selection of beautiful handmade products found in the local ‘Merkato’ in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, which is also the largest open air market in Africa".

Some of the gems currently available include stuffed animals, egg cups and accessories.
